As an architect of modern design, Mei and geologist Jean Pierre were eager to embrace a high-rise lifestyle, with its panoramic city views and close proximity to work and amenities. Though, it was important for them to marry the modern feel of the skyscraper with elements that honor her heritage and his personal passion – ancient Chinese culture.

The foundation of the apartment's design was formed in the use of clean lines both straight and curved; neutral palettes scaling from white to light warm tones; and natural materials like wood and stone. And to integrate the black detailing of the large window frames, Mei installed a Franke microwave and oven, made of stainless steel and sleek black glass. Not only does this enhance the luxurious design of the space, these appliances enable a kitchen fit for growing families and home gatherings.

With the foundation being both modern and minimal, Mei and Jean Pierre could let their personal touch shine through in the decor. From paper lantern lamps to whimsical forest wallpaper to posters of Chinese proverbs, these traditional pieces help to bring balance and life to an otherwise anonymous and futuristic skyscraper.

Meet Mei and Jean Pierre

Meet Mei and Jean Pierre , a couple of 36-year-olds who met and married in Paris while Mei earned her PhD. Though they'd spent 4 years together in the city of love, they'd actually fallen more in love with Shanghai, a city that spoke both to her heritage and to his passion – ancient Chinese culture. As a modern architect, it was evident that Mei would take on the majority of their new home's designs, but it was their shared lifestyle that she was designing for. Hosting dinner parties in an open kitchen, listening to smooth jazz while working from home, and of course, enjoying the surrounding city.
