Cafécore culture: transforming homes into stylish coffee havens

Leading a busy life means appreciating pauses from the daily schedule to enjoy the small “me” moments. That might be quietly sipping an early morning espresso before the day’s hubbub begins or chatting with girlfriends over a cappuccino. This goes hand in hand with the current cafécore trend– creating stylish spaces at home with cosy furniture, tactile soft furnishings, mood lighting, mugs, accessories and equipment that allow you to create your very own coffee heaven.

Cafécore is one of the key trends on Pinterest this year and it’s for the coffee enthusiasts who want to create and share the coffee shop experience, without stepping outside the door. Post pandemic, it was all about the bar-cart style drinks trolley – vodka martini anyone? – now it’s all about the at-home barista-style drinks.

The Cafécore lifestyle

With millions of cups of coffee drunk around the world every day, more than tea according to many studies, the desire for personalised coffee experiences has never been greater.

We are becoming coffee aficionados diving into the art of coffee making, enjoying the process of selecting beans, experimenting with different cups, syrups, and brewing methods. It’s a passion that’s becoming grooved into our daily routines, home life and social activities. Cafecore encourages conviviality and connection, from kick starting the day with your favourite flat white to lingering over an espresso chatting with friends at the end of a dinner party. What’s not to like?

Knowing and choosing your beans is all part of the Cafécore experience and here’s a few quick tips:

Understanding coffee types:
There are two species of plant responsible for most of the world’s coffee. Arabica is considered to be superior in flavour and less bitter in taste, while Robusta has a higher caffeine content, so is great for those looking to jumpstart their day.

Know your roasts:
Generally speaking, the more coffee beans are roasted, resulting in a darker roast, the more bitterness and body they acquire. This gives the coffee a strong, rich, and bold flavour.

·       Light Roasts: Generally, more complex in flavour and have higher acidity.

·       Medium Roasts: A balance of subtle and toasted flavours

·       Dark Roasts: Richer, more bitter flavours, ideal for milky coffees.

The term ‘strength’ on a supermarket coffee bag indicates the roast level. Most bags have strength ratings ranging from 3 to 5, with higher numbers representing stronger coffee

Single origin vs blends:
Blends combine beans from different places for a consistent, comforting taste, while single-origin coffees reflect the unique flavours of where they're grown. Countries like Brazil and Colombia offer nutty, chocolatey blends, good with or without milk, while Kenya and Ethiopia provide fruity, acidic options best enjoyed black. Nevertheless, a country's flavour isn't always guaranteed; growing conditions also play a role.

Whole beans or ground?
When choosing between whole beans or ground, consider that ground coffee loses its freshness quickly after opening, typically within a day or two. Whole beans maintain their freshness for longer due to less exposure to air. Investing in a burr grinder allows you to adjust the grind size to match your brewing equipment, with finer grinds for espresso machines, medium for filter coffee, and coarser for French press.

There’s a wide choice of options ranging from cafetieres, capsule coffee machines, hob espresso makers and sophisticated built-in coffee machines that are at the pinnacle of luxury and design prestige, as well as convenience.

Accessories like coffee bean canisters, latte art sets and stirrers are integral to this ritual, enhancing every step of the coffee crafting experience. They add a touch of elegance and functionality, ensuring your coffee station becomes a haven of both style and substance.
