Science-Based Targets

Franke’s near-term and net-zero greenhouse gas emission reduction targets have been validated by the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi), setting a cornerstone in our sustainability journey.

The latest climate science from the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) – described by the United Nations as “code red” – shows it is possible to limit global temperature rise to 1.5°C, but humanity is dangerously close to that threshold.

Franke wants to do its part and has thus joined the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Race to Zero. But we are not alone, check out other companies who have set their own science-based targets and join us on ensuring the wellbeing of future generations.

Our science-based targets

Here are Franke’s targets as validated by the SBTi.

Overall net-zero target

Franke commits to reach net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across the value chain by 2050 from a 2020 base year.

Near-term targets

  • Franke commits to reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 56% by 2030 from a 2020 base year*.
  • Franke also commits that 74% of its customers by emissions covering use of sold products, will have science-based targets by 2028.
  • Franke further commits to reduce absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions from purchased goods and services, capital goods, and upstream transportation and distribution 32.5% by 2033 from a 2020 base year.

Long-term targets

  • Franke commits to reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 90% by 2050 from a 2020 base year*.
  • Franke also commits to reduce absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions 90% within the same timeframe.

*The target boundary includes biogenic land-related emissions and removals from bioenergy feedstocks.

Achieving the targets

Scope 1 and 2

Franke will focus efforts on its most emission-intensive sites and facilities, with a variety of measures aimed at improving the energy efficiency and operational environmental performance.

Our focus areas for Scope 1 and 2

  • Increase photovoltaic generation capacity
  • Expand waste heat-recovery capacity
  • Conduct in-depth energy audits at key plants
  • Invest into energy-efficient machinery and machinery upgrades

  • Digitalization of key production processes
  • Introducing real-time Track & Trace solutions within the manufacturing process
  • Pro-active interaction and sustainability roundtables with key customers and suppliers
  • Partner with technology suppliers to further optimize energy consumption

Scope 3

Franke's Scope 3 emissions are mostly connected to the use of sold products (category 11), followed by the purchased goods and services (category 1). Other significant contributors include capital goods (category 2) and upstream transportation and distribution (category 4) with the remainder belonging to all other Scope 3 categories.
